Sensory Assessments and Interventions

Supporting Sensory Processing and Regulation for Improved Daily Functioning

At Sigma Therapies, we provide Sensory Assessments and Interventions to help individuals who experience difficulties with sensory processing.

Our Occupational Therapists assess sensory sensitivities and develop tailored interventions to support sensory integration and regulation.

Whether you’re managing sensory overload, under-responsiveness, or seeking strategies to cope with specific sensory challenges, our interventions are designed to enhance comfort, focus, and independence in daily life.

What Are Sensory Assessments and Interventions?

Sensory assessments evaluate how individuals process and respond to sensory input from their environment. For many people, particularly those with sensory processing disorders, autism, ADHD, or anxiety, sensory experiences like sound, touch, and light can feel overwhelming or underwhelming, affecting their ability to function in everyday settings.

Our Sensory Interventions provide practical strategies and activities that help individuals regulate their sensory responses, promoting more balanced and comfortable interactions with their surroundings. The goal is to improve emotional regulation, focus, and participation in daily activities.

How Our Sensory Assessments and Interventions Can Help You

Our Sensory Assessments and Interventions are designed to support individuals who struggle with:

Sensory Overload:
For those who are hypersensitive to sensory stimuli (e.g., loud noises, bright lights), we develop strategies to reduce sensory overload and help manage daily activities more comfortably.

Under-Responsiveness to Sensory Input:
For individuals who are under-responsive (e.g., needing more sensory input to feel engaged), we design interventions that provide appropriate sensory stimulation to improve focus and engagement.

Emotional Regulation:
We help individuals manage emotional responses triggered by sensory experiences, promoting better regulation and reduced anxiety or frustration.

Improving Daily Functioning:
We provide practical tools and recommendations to make environments—whether at home, school, or work—more sensory-friendly, improving participation in daily tasks.

Self-Calming Techniques:
For those who experience sensory distress, we teach self-calming strategies and coping mechanisms to help them manage overwhelming sensory input.

What’s Involved in a Sensory Assessment?

Our sensory assessments are comprehensive, ensuring we understand each individual’s unique sensory profile and challenges. The process typically involves:

Initial Consultation

We begin by discussing the individual’s sensory experiences, challenges, and any specific goals or concerns related to sensory processing. This helps us tailor the assessment to their needs.

Sensory Profile Evaluation

Our Occupational Therapists conduct a detailed evaluation using sensory questionnaires, observations, and interactive assessments. This allows us to identify how the individual processes different types of sensory input, including sight, sound, touch, movement, taste, and smell.

Environmental Assessment

We assess how the individual’s home, school, or work environment may contribute to sensory overload or under-stimulation, providing recommendations for modifications that support sensory regulation.

Personalised Report

Based on the assessment, we provide a detailed report outlining the individual’s sensory profile, including areas of hypersensitivity or under-responsiveness, along with tailored intervention strategies.

What’s Involved in Sensory Interventions?

Following the assessment, our interventions are personalised to meet the individual’s sensory processing needs. Interventions may include:

Sensory Integration Therapy:

We offer structured sensory activities that aim to improve the brain’s ability to process and respond to sensory input. This can include activities that involve movement, touch, sound, or visual stimuli.

Calming Strategies for Sensory Overload:

For individuals with sensory sensitivities, we teach relaxation techniques, deep pressure strategies, and environmental modifications (e.g., using noise-cancelling headphones or dim lighting) to reduce overstimulation.

Sensory Diets:

We develop sensory diets—customised plans of sensory activities—that provide the right type and amount of sensory input throughout the day to help individuals remain regulated and focused.

Adaptive Equipment Recommendations:

We may recommend specific tools and equipment, such as weighted blankets, fidget toys, or sensory seating options, to support sensory regulation and enhance comfort in different environments.

Parent and Caregiver Support:

We work closely with parents and caregivers to implement sensory strategies at home, ensuring that they have the knowledge and tools to support the individual’s sensory needs in daily life.
