How Our Cognitive Rehabilitation Services Can Help You

Our services are designed to address a wide range of cognitive challenges, including:

  • Memory and Recall: We provide strategies to improve short-term and long-term memory, including memory aids and techniques to enhance recall in daily tasks.

  • Attention and Concentration: We offer activities and exercises to help individuals improve their focus and attention, particularly for tasks that require sustained mental effort.

  • Executive Functioning: For individuals struggling with planning, organising, or problem-solving, we provide strategies to improve decision-making and cognitive flexibility in managing daily tasks.

  • Language and Communication: We help individuals with language difficulties (aphasia) resulting from brain injury or stroke by offering strategies to improve communication and interaction with others.

  • Emotional and Behavioural Support: Cognitive changes often come with emotional challenges. We provide guidance on managing frustration, anxiety, or other emotional responses to cognitive difficulties.

  • Adapting to Cognitive Challenges: We teach practical strategies for adapting to cognitive impairments in everyday life, such as creating routines, using checklists, and employing compensatory techniques.

What’s Involved in Cognitive Rehabilitation?

Our cognitive rehabilitation programs are personalised to each individual’s specific needs and goals. The process typically involves:

  • Initial Consultation and Assessment: We begin with a comprehensive assessment of your cognitive abilities, including memory, attention, language, and executive function. This helps us understand the areas that need improvement and develop a targeted rehabilitation plan.

  • Goal Setting: Together with you (and your family or carers, if applicable), we set realistic goals for cognitive rehabilitation. These may focus on improving memory, enhancing attention, or adapting to new ways of completing daily tasks.

  • Personalised Rehabilitation Plan: Based on the assessment, we create a tailored rehabilitation plan that includes exercises, cognitive activities, and strategies to help improve cognitive function and manage challenges. The plan is regularly reviewed and adjusted as you progress.

  • One-on-One Therapy Sessions: Our Occupational Therapists provide regular therapy sessions that focus on building cognitive skills through targeted activities, games, and tasks that stimulate cognitive function.

  • Functional Training: We help you apply the cognitive strategies you’ve learned to everyday activities, such as cooking, managing finances, or returning to work, ensuring that you can maintain independence.

  • Ongoing Monitoring and Support: We continuously monitor your progress and make adjustments to the rehabilitation plan to ensure that you are making steady improvements toward your goals

Cognitive Rehabilitaiton Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Cognitive Rehabilitation?

Cognitive rehabilitation is a therapeutic approach aimed at improving cognitive functions such as memory, attention, language, and executive functioning (e.g., planning and decision-making). This type of rehabilitation is typically used to help individuals recover from brain injuries, strokes, or neurological conditions such as dementia or Parkinson’s disease.

Our Occupational Therapists work with individuals to develop tailored therapy plans that focus on improving cognitive performance and adapting to cognitive challenges in everyday life.

Our goal is to help you restore cognitive abilities, regain confidence, and improve your ability to perform daily tasks independently.

  • Is Cognitive Rehabilitation Covered by Medicare?

Cognitive rehabilitation services provided by Occupational Therapists may be covered under certain Medicare programs if referred by a GP as part of a care plan, such as through the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) scheme.

Additionally, if you are an NDIS participant, cognitive rehabilitation may be funded through your NDIS plan. Private health insurance may also offer rebates for cognitive rehabilitation services.

We recommend discussing your funding options with your healthcare provider, NDIS planner, or private insurer.

If you or a loved one are experiencing cognitive challenges due to brain injury, stroke, or a neurological condition, Sigma Therapies is here to help.
